Useful Extras for your Camp Oven
There are a few additional tools that are useful with your camp oven. A long strong hook that can lift your camp oven lid is useful for checking cooking progress. If it’s strong enough it can be used to remove the oven from the coals. You can create your own from thick wire, or sometimes you can find something similar in hardware stores. They are usually sold as tent peg pullers, are around 60cm to 70cm and come with a wooden handle.
You’ll also need a pair of long handled tongs, a pot scrape (spatula or putty knife), oven mitt or heavy pot holder, a small non-nylon brush with which to remove the ashes from the lid, paper towels and oil.
Cooking with coals from a camp fire is ideal but it does take some practice. You need to get the coals in the right spot to avoid burning your meal. A good alternative to camp fire coals is heat beads. These are easier to control, hold their heat longer and you can use them to practice the art of camp oven cooking at your home.
